Why H.E.A.R.T. Center?
The answer is simple. We LOVE camp so much that we made sure that our format meets the needs of all types of campers. By design we provide exemplary services to the special needs community but our inclusive philosophy opens the camp up to campers with and without special needs. For our adaptive campers, we noticed a common dilemma among our families: Vacation Time or Therapy? Summer is supposed to be fun, but their kiddos need structure and continued therapies in order to continue progress. At its core, our camp is life-skills based. We provide a highly trained team to put the fun back into your child's break, while creating an individualized therapeutic plan for each camper that incorporates your child's goals in a positive and unique way. With small group sizes and an individualized therapeutic approach, your child will have all the fun of a traditional camp while developing and enhancing skills that will last a lifetime. We believe in fun. We believe in experiential learning to teach life skills and independence. We believe in the power of summer camp!
Ages: Inclusive to youth of ALL abilities, age 7-17 (Participants Age 18+ should look at our Vocational Camp Program)
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What is the Staff to Camper Ratio?
A: We guarantee a 1:4 ratio but with our high volunteer involvement it is often a 1:2 or even 1:1 ratio!
Q: Who can attend camp?
A: We do our best to make camp accessible for youth of all ability levels. If your child requires a high level of support for basic needs and/or medical care we request an aid join as well. If you would prefer that your child attend with the assistance of an aid or habilitation provider, that is absolutely fine. Camp is a great time for your providers to learn additional interventions and activities to be used on a regular basis. We believe in an individualized approach so contact us today to see if camp could be a good fit for your child!
Q: Do you offer financial assistance?
A: We provide need based assistance whenever possible. Finances should never have to be a barrier to your child receiving the services and opportunities they deserve. Contact us today to inquire about scholarship availability.
Q: Where do campers sleep?
A: Campers sleep in cabins! Boys and girls are separated. There is at least one camp counselor that sleeps in every cabin!
Q: What activities do campers participate in?
A: Our days are packed full of activities! For the first half of the day campers will participate in horse programming, horse education and recreation programming such as baseball, archery, soccer, art and more. The afternoons are most often spent out on nature exploration adventures such as crawdad fishing, hiking, scavenger hunts and swimming in the creek. Campers have daily responsibilities assigned to them each day such as helping with meal prep, horse care and maintaining their living quarters. Each night ends with a campfire and campfire games as long as weather is permitting!
Q: How far away is camp and is transportation provided?
A: We are fortunate enough to have the use of Wilderness Ranch which is located in the beautiful forest of Pinetop, AZ. It is approximately a 3 hour drive from Phoenix and transportation is provided! Drop off and Pick Up are at our location in Phoenix.
Q: What if my child has medication or dietary restrictions?
A: Its very common that our campers have daily medications. Medication is handled by Camp Leader and will be distributed as instructed. Many of our campers have dietary restrictions, please inform us in advance and we will work with you to make sure accommodations are in place!
